Modal verbs (can, could, must, should, ought to, had better, may, might, will, would, shall) are auxiliary verbs that add the idea of ability, necessity, request, permission, advice, desire, probability, etc., to the action expressed by the main verb. In other words, modal verbs describe the speaker's attitude to the action expressed by the main verb. Obviously a translation cannot be correct unless it has the same modality as the source text. The translator must be able to understand various modal relationships expressed by different means in SL and to choose the appropriate means in TL. This is practical value of the work. English makes use of three main types of language units to express modal relationships: modal verbs, modal words and word groups, and mood forms. The aim of the paper is to look through and classify the problems of translation of English modal verbs. The objectives are to characterize modal verbs and their types, regard the difficulties of using English modal verbs; to translate different meanings of modal verbs and classify the problems of modal verbs translation.
