The focus of this study is the adequate translation of “speaking” proper names in Russian literature.
Translation problems have always attracted the attention of linguists, philologists, translation theorists and translators-practitioners. One of the main problems of translation studies is the problem of translatability and untranslatability, in particular, associated with the translation of non-equivalent vocabulary. One of the main groups of non-equivalent vocabulary includes proper nouns. One of the most difficult for proper names is “speaking” proper names.
At the moment, there are no well-established and proven methods of translating “speaking” proper names in translation theory. "Speaking" proper names, in contrast to proper names, have an additional semantic load that reveals the image of the hero, his character traits or external image. All this poses a task for the translator, not only to translate the "speaking" proper names, but also to convey their objective meaning, as well as their national and historical flavor.
