The topicality of the work is that theoretical grammar is the main basis of the practical one and it is very important to know its main development stages. The object is theoretical grammar of English. The subject is the investigation of development stages of grammar. The aim of the work is to overlook the main development stages of English theoretical grammar. In order to achieve the aim we should follow the tasks: - to regard the differences between Practical and Theoretical Grammar in English; - to see the development of English Grammar; - to show English Grammars before 1900 (The First Period) and English Grammars in the 20th Century (The Second Period) Theoretical value is that the theoretical material was gathered and systematized on the theme. Practical value of the work is that it can be used in teaching theoretical language courses at the seminars for students. The theme was regarded by such scientists and linguists as R. Lowth, H. Sweet, N. Chomsky, Hathaway, D. Farro, H. Whitehall and others. The course paper consists of introduction which discovers topicality, aims and objectives of the work, two chapters where the main stages of English grammar development are described and then systematized. In conclusion, we made some total of the observed theme. Bibliography includes the sources that were used during preparation for the term work.
